Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

 

Water cut in Fort and Pettah today

[May 11 2013]

A 12-hour water cut will be imposed today to Sunday morning in the Colombo Fort and Pettah areas, National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWS&DB) sources said. The water cut will be imposed from 8 pm today to 8 am tomorrow.

 

Several luxury vehicles seized

Sri Lanka Customs seized several luxury vehicles brought to the country on a false import declaration to avoid paying higher taxes. Customs spokesman Lesly Gamini said his department’s sleuths seized two cars and one van which were fraudulently declared as excavators.

 

ALs from Aug 5 to 31

The 2013 GCE Advanced Level examination will be held from August 5 to 31 while the Grade 5 Scholarship exam is scheduled to be held on August 25, Examinations chief said.

‘32 Sevanagala vehicles transferred to Daya Group’

UPFA parliamentarian Shantha Bandara raising a privilege matter in Parliament yesterday, said that 32 vehicles belonging to the Sevanagala Sugar Factory have been transferred to the Daya Group of Companies after the House passed the Revival of Underperforming Enterprises and Underutilized Assets Bill on Wednesday.

Jan-Oct, 2011 tourist arrivals surpassed arrivals in 2010:

Sri Lanka, the favoured tourist destination

Tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka from January to October this year had surpassed the annual tourist arrivals of 654,476 recorded in 2010. Accordingly, tourist arrivals in the first ten months of 2011 rose 34.2 percent to 667,569, compared to 497,598 tourist arrivals in the same period last year, the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) said.

Army deserters to be delisted

The government has decided to delist around 60,000 army deserters in the country due to the involvement of many army deserters in serious crimes in the recent past. A special programme in this regard has been introduced by Army Commander Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya. According to Military spokesperson Brigadier Nihal Hapuarachchi, around 60,000 army personnel had deserted the service since 1982.
