Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa yesterday
said that the government would take all possible measures to
eliminate underworld activities, extortion and other crimes that
affect the smooth flow of businesses and society and sought the
support of the business community to achieve this objective.

Joint naval exercise begins
The Joint Indo-Sri Lanka Naval Exercise, “SLINEX
2011”, commenced yesterday in the seas off Trincomalee. Indian Navy
ships which arrived in Trincomalee under the command of Rear Admiral
HCS Bisht, the Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet (FOCEF) of the
Indian Navy were in attendance.

Man held on abduction charge
Ingiriya police arrested a 50-year-old man who
entered Ingiriya Hospital without permission and tried to abduct a
woman. The woman aged around 60 was receiving treatment as a
residential patient. The suspect had entered the ward at about 2.00
am and tried to abduct her.

Drunk drivers fined
The Colombo Traffic Police during the weekend
arrested 35 drunken drivers and produced them before the respective
Magistrate’s Courts. Colombo DIG Anura Senanayake who is directing
the investigations said that on the directions of Defence Secretary
Gotabhaya Rajapaksa the Traffic Police had deployed a special police
team to nab drunken drivers who are a menace.
