Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

 

Water cut in Fort and Pettah today

[May 11 2013]

A 12-hour water cut will be imposed today to Sunday morning in the Colombo Fort and Pettah areas, National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWS&DB) sources said. The water cut will be imposed from 8 pm today to 8 am tomorrow.

 

Several luxury vehicles seized

Sri Lanka Customs seized several luxury vehicles brought to the country on a false import declaration to avoid paying higher taxes. Customs spokesman Lesly Gamini said his department’s sleuths seized two cars and one van which were fraudulently declared as excavators.

The 2013 GCE Advanced Level examination will be held from August 5 to 31 while the Grade 5 Scholarship exam is scheduled to be held on August 25, Examinations chief said.

Two 10-storeyed buildings to be built:

The government will spend over Rs 950 million to build 500 housing units for slum dwellers in Colombo city, a Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Ministry spokesman said. “It is clear that the government has no intention of removing the low-income groups from Colombo but intends to uplift their living standards,” the spokesman said.

UN Human Rights Council :

SL delegation receives members’ support

The Sri Lankan delegation to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) sessions in Geneva successfully thwarted attempts to bring any proposal against Sri Lanka by clearly stating Sri Lanka’s position against such attempts, said delegation member Irrigation and Water Resources Management Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva.

Petrol fiasco: CPC dpty manager sent on compulsory leave

Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) Deputy Commercial Manager was sent on compulsory leave from Thursday until a disciplinary inquiry is held against him. Petroleum Industries Ministry spokesperson said that the Deputy Commercial Manager was sent on leave on the instructions of the CPC chairman.
