Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), UK, held their
International, Council and Trustee Board elections recently.
International membership consists of seven regions. Senior consultant
and former Chairman of Sri Lanka Group ST Perera was elected Chairman of
the Southern Asia region which includes SAARC countries for a 3 year
term. He will represent the region in Council and the International
Strategy Board. This is the first time that a Sri Lankan Engineer is
elected as Chair for the Southern Asia region.
Sam has held senior positions in Ceylon Petroleum corporation, in
Mining overseas and Construction industries in Sri Lanka. He is a
Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the IMechE and an Honorary Life
Fellow and past Council Member of the Institution of Engineers, Sri
Lanka. He has also served some years as a Vice President of the
Organization of Professional Associations, Sri Lanka. Sam has
represented the Sri Lankan Group of IMechE and made presentations at
International conferences held in Australia, Malaysia, Singapore and
He is an old boy of Sri Sumangala College Panadura and alumnus of the
University of Brighton in UK.
Hashani Umeshka Ratnaweera obtained her Bachelor of Business
Administration degree with honours from Northwood University, Michigon,
USA (accredited to American National College). The degree was awarded to
Umeshka by Director Admissions Northwood (Asia/Africa) Daniel Kelch
during the graduation ceremony held at Colombo Hilton recently. She is a
past pupil of St Bridget’s Convent, Colombo 7 and is the youngest
daughter of Susil and Priyanganie Ratnaweera.
A cleaner of a container lorry K A Tharindu Priyankara (21) of

Seven months RI
A person who pleaded guilty for sexually harassing a
Japanese woman, while travelling in public transport was sentenced
to seven months rigorous imprisonment by Colombo Fort Magistrate and
Additional District Judge Lanka Jayaratne yesterday. In addition the

Dudley Senanayake Memorial Oration
The Dudley Senanayake Memorial Foundation will hold
the annual Dudley Senanayake memorial oration on October 14, The
Friedrich Naumann Stiftung, fur die freiheit[FNF] is sponsoring the
lecture. It will be delivered by Dr Param Coomaraswamy. He is by
profession a Barrister-at-law from Inner Temple, London and has been
a renowned scholar in Kuala Lampur since 1967.
The oration will take place at the BCIS auditorium
at the BMICH at 6pm on October 14.
Discourse on Che Guevara
A discourse on Che Guevara and the future of
socialism will be held on September 13 at 4 pm at the National
Library and Documentation Services Board, Nidahas Mawatha, Colombo
Dr Nirmal Ranjith Devasiri of the University of
Colombo and Pubudu Jayagoda will initiate the discourse. A
collection of essays titled Samajawadaya saha Minisa Saha Wenath
Rachana written by Che Guevara and translated by Jayatilleke de
Silva will also be launched at this event.
Badulla bars closed
Liquor stores in Badulla will be closed today to
mark the main Kataragama and Paththini Randoli perahera, said
Badulla District Secretary Rohan Keerthi Dissanayake.
Buddha statue stolen from temple museum
An ancient Buddha statue has been stolen from the
museum of the Yatala Chaitya at Tissamaharama. The robbery had taken
place on September 10 morning. The robbers had entered the museum by
breaking a window, Viharadipathi Ven Meegahaela Pannaseeha Thera
said. The thera said the statue was stolen as it contained treasure.
Deadly fall into pit
A woman aged 48, died after falling into a lavatory
pit at her home after the concrete of the pit suddenly gave away
under her weight, while she was walking on it. Nobody was at home at
the time of the incident.
The deceased was identified as Manel Mangalika, an
Her 78-year-old mother had found her daughter’s body
in the lavatory pit after returning home the same evening. Kottawa
police removed the body out of the pit with the help of villagers.
