Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

 

Water cut in Fort and Pettah today

[May 11 2013]

A 12-hour water cut will be imposed today to Sunday morning in the Colombo Fort and Pettah areas, National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWS&DB) sources said. The water cut will be imposed from 8 pm today to 8 am tomorrow.

 

Several luxury vehicles seized

Sri Lanka Customs seized several luxury vehicles brought to the country on a false import declaration to avoid paying higher taxes. Customs spokesman Lesly Gamini said his department’s sleuths seized two cars and one van which were fraudulently declared as excavators.

 

ALs from Aug 5 to 31

The 2013 GCE Advanced Level examination will be held from August 5 to 31 while the Grade 5 Scholarship exam is scheduled to be held on August 25, Examinations chief said.

 

 

President orders litter-free glowing Galle Face: President Mahinda Rajapaksa who decided to go to Galle Face for his morning constitutional yesterday, was evidently irked by the litter, left behind by previous night’s revelers and ordered officials to clear all the garbage and make the area clean. Pharmacy gives wrong drug to health minister

Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena was issued a wrong drug by a private pharmacy at Castle Street Colombo on Saturday. Following this, raids were conducted in and around Colombo, and legal action taken against several pharmacies and a drug store under the Cosmetics, Devices and Drugs Regulatory Authority, Health Ministry spokesman W M D Wanninayake said.

Police played prominent role to defeat terrorism - IGP

The Police assisted the three Forces, Army, Navy and the Air Force, to completely vanquish the LTTE after three decades, said Inspector General of Police N K Illangakoon addressing the 145th Police Day ceremony at the Bambalapitiya Police Grounds in the presence of Senior DIGs, DIGs, Senior SPs, SPs, ASPs and other ranking officers. Two minutes’ silence was observed by the participants as a mark of respect to the Police personnel who had scarified their lives for the motherland and who were disabled during the war.
