Rewards for environment friendly practices

Environment friendly industries and services were recognized for
their contribution in environmental conservation at the first National
Green Awards ceremony organized by the Central Environmental Authority (CEA)
held at the BMICH recently.
Twenty five winners received their awards from chief guest President
Mahinda Rajapaksa. The event was organized to mark the 30th anniversary
of the CEA.
A special award was granted to Geocycle for its contribution to
hazardous waste management. Six gold medals, nine silver medals and nine
bronze medals were awarded in recognition of green practices of
industries and services.
The winners had been selected by a nine member expert panel.
Addressing the occasion, Environment Minister Anura Priyadarshana
Yapa said that the government pursues sustainable development that goes
hand in hand with the environment. CEA Chairman Charitha Herath said
that the Green Awards ceremony will be organized annually to integrate
private sector stakeholders in the government's green efforts.
Environment Ministry Secretary Dr R H S Samarathunga, Secretary to
the President Lalith Weeratunga and about 350 participants attended the
ceremony. |
