New school ground for Sangamiththa

Sri Sangamiththa Balika Vidyalaya, Colombo held a special ceremony to open and name their newly constructed school ground as Vinitha Jayaweera ground recently.

The ceremony was held under the patronage of Colombo District MP Thilanga Sumathipala, School Activity Director to the Education Ministry Nandasena Madawanaarachchi, Western Province Education Director Jayantha Nanayakkara, Provincial Councillor Renuka Perera and Sri Sangamiththa Balika Vidyalaya Principal Vinitha Jayaweera.


Treasure hunters arrested

Three alleged treasure hunters were arrested by Kandy Police in the Rathotai, Kansarappola area.

Investigations are continuing.


New Secretary, Ministry of Social Services

R M S Rathnayaka, former Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Defence took over duties as the Secretary of the Social Service Ministry in a ceremony held at the Ministry premises yesterday.

Felix Perera, Minister of Social Services, Lakshman Hulugalle, Director General of the Media Centre for National Security, Indu Rathnayaka, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Defence and Jagath Jayaweera, Commissioner General of the Registration of Persons Department also participated in this occasion.


Sarath Wimalasiri on Shraddhanjalee

The Sinhala National Service of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation presents a lyric composer, poet and a free lance journalist W K Sarath Wimalasiri through Shraddhanjalee programme from 12 noon to 12.45 pm today.

He makes an analytical presentation of the songs composed, based on various themes that come in Buddhist literature.

He will also present his views on lyrics, singing and music on topics under discussion.


Grading selection tests cancelled

The English grading test which was scheduled to be held on July 16 and the Master of Education selection test which was scheduled to be held on July 17 by the Open University of Sri Lanka will not be held due to unavoidable circumstances. New dates will be informed later.


Dilip seeks assistance

Dilip Gunawardene of 1st Lane, Nedimala, Dehiwala, a senior figure in the book trade is suffering from Multiple Myeloma (Plasma Cell Leukema).

Dilip is being treated by Consultant Haematologist Dr Lalhindra Gooneratne. He has to undergo a bone marrow transplant at Vellore, India for which nearly Rs three million is required. Minister Peiris leaves for Pakistan

External Affairs Minister Professor G L Peiris leaves for Islamabad today on a two-day official visit and he is scheduled to meet Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari during his visit, a release issued by External Affairs Ministry said yesterday.


Inaugurations

A ferry service between Kurikadduwan in Pungudithivu and Nainathivu will be inaugurated today by Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa. He will also inaugurate an electricity scheme in Kayts, which will provide electricity for Melinijimunai and Mankulam.

A pipe borne water supply scheme to Mandaithivu will also be inaugurated on the same day by Water Supply and Drainage Minister Dinesh Gunawardana.


Workshop

The Indian Cultural Centre, Colombo will hold a Bharata Natyam Workshop attended by Bharata Natyam exponent, Rama Vaidyanathan in association with Indo Lanka Forum at ICC, Auditorium, 16/2, Gregory's Road Colombo 7 on July 17 at 10.00 a.m.


Photography album

A photograph album with 50 photographs of children depicting happiness, protection, brotherhood, encouragement, motivation and innocence will be published to mark World Children's Day that falls on October 1.

Photographers can send in their entries to Secretary, The Ministry of Child Development and Women's Affairs, No 175, Nawala Road, Nugegoda.

The photographer should indicate the theme of the photograph, his/her name and address.

The Child Development and Women's Affairs Ministry will celebrate World Children's Day on October 1 at Temple Trees under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.


Aum Sri Sai Ram

Shri Ravi Raj Nasrey Ghazal and Bhajan Singer of repute will arrive shortly in Sri Lanka to present his performance mainly to the devotees of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. He has been performing for more than twenty years in a number of cities in India and in USA, UK, Canada, Malaysia, Mauritius, South Africa, Tanzania and Nepal.

His first ever performance in Sri Lanka would be at Sai Mandir, 22, Barnes Place, Colombo 7 at 6 pm on Thursday, July 21, which would be followed by a performance at Hindu Ladies College hall, Wellawatte at 4.30 pm on Sunday, July 24. He would perform at the Sai Centre Jaffna on Friday July 29 at 6 pm.


Concerts cancelled

The Goethe-Institut announces that the concerts by Europa Philharmonie, scheduled for July 18 and 19 at the Mount Lavinia Hotel will not take place due to unforeseen circumstances.

Tickets, which have been purchased already, will be refunded at the respective ticket offices.
