Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

 

Water cut in Fort and Pettah today

[May 11 2013]

A 12-hour water cut will be imposed today to Sunday morning in the Colombo Fort and Pettah areas, National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWS&DB) sources said. The water cut will be imposed from 8 pm today to 8 am tomorrow.

 

Several luxury vehicles seized

[May 09 2013]

Sri Lanka Customs seized several luxury vehicles brought to the country on a false import declaration to avoid paying higher taxes. Customs spokesman Lesly Gamini said his department’s sleuths seized two cars and one van which were fraudulently declared as excavators.

 

ALs from Aug 5 to 31

The 2013 GCE Advanced Level examination will be held from August 5 to 31 while the Grade 5 Scholarship exam is scheduled to be held on August 25, Examinations chief said.

 

 

Plaque to appreciate President’s work : The progress report of Social Virtues and Children’s Rights Promotive Programme was handed over to President Mahinda Rajapaksa at President’s House Kandy yesterday. Founder of Social Virtues and Children’s Rights Promotive Programme SGM Karunarathna and Pujapitiya Provincial Secretary Daya Menike Sarathchandra presented the progress report together with a CD and book to the President. Later children of the Social Virtues and Children’s Rights Promotive Programme presented a plaque to President Mahinda Rajapaksa in appreciation of the President’s dedication to create a righteous society in a prosperous country. Defence expenditure down to 3 pc of GDP

The government yesterday said its defence expenditure has dropped to three percent of the Gross Domestic Product. According to Finance and Planning Ministry Secretary Dr P B Jayasundara, the government has managed to reduce the defence expenditure systematically. He was delivering the keynote speech at the Sri Lanka Economic Summit 2011, held at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel yesterday.

Three member committee to probe petrol import

Payment for 20,000 tons of petrol suspended:

Petroleum Resources Minister Susil Premajayantha suspended payment for the 20,000 tons of petrol, reportedly of low quality. The minister has appointed a three member committee to investigate whether any fraud had taken place in the process of importing petrol. The committee which comprises the ministerial Secretary attached to another ministry, former oil refinery section deputy manager and Ceylon Petroleum Corporation Marketing Manager, will submit a comprehensive report over the petrol issue.

MoD lifts foreigners’ pre-travel approval to North

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) lifted the imposed pre-travel approval to the North, exclusively for foreign passport holders with effect from yesterday. According to military liaison officials, foreign passport holders are no longer required to produce a MoD travel approval document at Omanthai entry/exist point- the main travel checking point located in Vavuniya.
