Special trains for Vesak

Sri Lanka Railways has introduced a special train service in view of the Vesak Week for those travelling to Colombo for the Vesak celebrations. The special services will be in operation on May 25, 26 and 27 from Colombo Fort to Mahawa, Colombo Fort -Rambukkana, Colombo Fort - Aluthgama to Veyangoda, and Maradana to South Kalutara.

Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

 

 

Queen of the Sinhala Cinema Malani Fonseka, MP receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award from Festival Director Samuel Holt at the International Film Festival held in Kandy on Friday. This was the first international film festival held in Kandy. Over 15 of the newest independent films from around the world made their Sri Lankan premiere during the festival days. Malini Fonseka was the first Sri Lankan actress to receive an international award at the 9th Moscow International Film Festival in 1977 and the second international award was won by her at the 6th International Delhi Cinema Festival. Commenting on the Kandy International Film Festival, Malini Fonseka said that holding an international film festival in Kandy gives an indication to the world that Sri Lanka is a very safe place in the world to hold international events.

PSC solution on resolving conflict:

President to stand by Parliament’s decision

‘I will stand by a solution arrived at by the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) on resolving the conflict. ‘The PSC will provide an opportunity for all parties in Parliament to participate in the process of finding a solution. Parliament will take responsibility for a solution, besides emerging strong in the process’ President Mahinda Rajapaksa said yesterday.
