Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

 

Water cut in Fort and Pettah today

[May 11 2013]

A 12-hour water cut will be imposed today to Sunday morning in the Colombo Fort and Pettah areas, National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWS&DB) sources said. The water cut will be imposed from 8 pm today to 8 am tomorrow.

 

Several luxury vehicles seized

[May 09 2013]

Sri Lanka Customs seized several luxury vehicles brought to the country on a false import declaration to avoid paying higher taxes. Customs spokesman Lesly Gamini said his department’s sleuths seized two cars and one van which were fraudulently declared as excavators.

 

ALs from Aug 5 to 31

The 2013 GCE Advanced Level examination will be held from August 5 to 31 while the Grade 5 Scholarship exam is scheduled to be held on August 25, Examinations chief said.

Private bus strike called off

The private bus strike planned by Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association (LPBOA) from today was called off yesterday. LPBOA president Gemunu Wijeratne told the media that the proposed strike by his organization demanding a fare hike had been cancelled. However, Wijeratne said that his organization would go before courts in the future to sort out several issues including the proposed fare hike.

Govt media school coming up in two years

The government has planned to establish a Government Media School within the next two years to facilitate large-scale development in the media field. Mass Media and Information Ministry Secretary W B Ganegala said that this initiative proves the President’s dedication and interest to develop the media field, as mentioned in the Mahinda Chinthana policy as well as in the Mahinda Chinthana Future Vision policy.

National Mosquito Eradication Week ends:

Over 16,000 dengue breeding sites detected

The National Mosquito Eradication Week organized by the Health Ministry to eradicate dengue, covering all 305 MOH Divisions, concluded yesterday. During the Mosquito Eradication week which commenced on June 20, 468,841 premises were inspected by the Health Ministry officials.

All should get voter registration forms by July 15 - Polls Chief

The Elections Department began distributing voter registration forms from June 1, Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriva said. Deshapriya requested the public to inform the Grama Niladari, District Election Secretariat or the Elections Commissioner if they do not receive the voter registration forms by July 15. He said reviewing the voter register annually has a direct impact on the election process.
