The Meteorology Department yesterday launched its official web site
www.meteo.gov.lk after reconstructing it by using the latest information
technology to cater to modern day requirements. The public can get
instant updates on weather and impending disaster situations through
this web site.
Addressing the occasion, Disaster Management Minister Mahinda
Ameraweera, said that this move would help the Met Department to get
closer to the public, since anybody could have access to the web page
easily while being at home.
"With environment changes taking place in the country, the weather
has changed its usual patterns. Therefore the weather forecast is of
paramount importance for the construction field and agricultural and
fisheries industries," he observed.
Director General Meteorology Department G.B. Samarasinghe, said that
the web site would be updated every 10 minutes. The access to the web
site is available in all three languages. He said that weather forecast
for three days, times of sun rise and sunset as well as moon rise and
moon set will be included in the site. Disaster Management Ministry
