Five-year-old killed in lethal fire cracker blast

A grade one student of Peellawatte Primary School succumbed to her injuries in a fire cracker blast at a wedding ceremony in Kurana, Negombo.

Avindathi Thathsarani Weerasooriya (5 yrs and 5 months)of Uttaruwa, Minuwangoda was attending the wedding of a relation along with her grandmother, when she faced the unfortunate mishap.

Avindathi was about 20 meters away from the fire cracker blast but could not escape being fatally injured.

The funeral took place yesterday at Unnaruwa. Observers said that the unfortunate incident would not have occurred if the fire cracker was not as devastating as it proved to be.

The incident calls for a curb on the manufacture and sale of extra-powerful and lethal fire crackers, they said.
