Special trains for Vesak

Sri Lanka Railways has introduced a special train service in view of the Vesak Week for those travelling to Colombo for the Vesak celebrations. The special services will be in operation on May 25, 26 and 27 from Colombo Fort to Mahawa, Colombo Fort -Rambukkana, Colombo Fort - Aluthgama to Veyangoda, and Maradana to South Kalutara.

Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday said that certain elements are attempting to undermine the 2600th Sri Sambuddhatva Jayanthi which is to be celebrated on a grand scale by all people in the country. He said that all Sri Lankans should join hands and defeat this sinister motive. “It is the duty of all Sri Lankans to foil attempts to belittle the 2600th Sri Sambuddhatva Jayanthi,” President Rajapaksa said.

PM for UN Vesak celebrations in Thailand

Prime Minister D M Jayaratna will leave for Thailand today (May 13) to attend the United Nations Vesak celebrations to be held in Ayutthaya in Bangkok on the invitation of Thai Deputy Prime Minister Sanan Kajornprasart. The celebrations are organized by the Machachulalongkornraja Vidyalaya University of Bangkok.

Forty seven rejected nominations to be accepted

The Court of Appeal yesterday directed the Elections Commissioner and the Returning Officers to accept 47 nomination papers presented by three recognized political parties and independent groups. The court upheld that the rejection of these nomination papers by the election officials is a violation of local government election regulations.

Plans to recruit 30,000 youths to state sector

The government is taking measures to recruit 30,000 youths, including 15,000 graduates, to the public service by August this year to solve the unemployment problem and to involve the contribution of youths for the government’s ongoing development project.
