Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

 

Water cut in Fort and Pettah today

[May 11 2013]

A 12-hour water cut will be imposed today to Sunday morning in the Colombo Fort and Pettah areas, National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWS&DB) sources said. The water cut will be imposed from 8 pm today to 8 am tomorrow.

 

Several luxury vehicles seized

[May 09 2013]

Sri Lanka Customs seized several luxury vehicles brought to the country on a false import declaration to avoid paying higher taxes. Customs spokesman Lesly Gamini said his department’s sleuths seized two cars and one van which were fraudulently declared as excavators.

 

ALs from Aug 5 to 31

The 2013 GCE Advanced Level examination will be held from August 5 to 31 while the Grade 5 Scholarship exam is scheduled to be held on August 25, Examinations chief said.

CB predicts 8.5 percent growth for 2011

Increase in revenue collection from import taxes:

Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal said the Bank is predicting a growth of 8.5 percent for this year. The 61st annual report of the Monetary Board was submitted to the President and Finance and Planning Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Central Bank yesterday. Speaking at the presentation of the annual report 2010 the Governor said the year 2010 showed a great improvement and it was a good year amidst many challenges that the country had to face in 2009.

Trend suggests fast recovery from 2009 setback:

The Central Bank yesterday said that the country’s economy recorded an impressive growth of eight percent, the highest annual rate of growth reported in three decades. This remarkable achievement reflects a fast recovery from the setback suffered in 2009 and a move to a high and sustainable growth path. According to the 2010 Central Bank report which was released yesterday all key sectors of the economy reflected a commendable performance in 2010, underpinned by the peaceful domestic environment, improved investor confidence, favourable macroeconomic conditions and gradual recovery of the global economy from one of the deepest recession in history.

IGP to New Year shoppers:

Look out for pickpockets, snatch thieves

IGP Mahinda Balasooriya yesterday warned the public to be extra vigilant during the festive season shopping since pickpockets and snatch thieves were on the prowl ready to cash in from the congestion. Police Spokesman SP Prishantha Jayakody told the Daily News that IGP Balasooriya had instructed him to deploy a sufficient number of police personnel to man market places, bus stands and railway stations to prevent pick pocketing, chain snatching and other crimes.

Standard time from midnight

The government yesterday declared the country’s standard time which needs to be adhered to by media organizations, telecommunication companies and all institutions in general by law. According to the Internal Trade and Cooperatives Ministry spokesman, President Mahinda Rajapaksa declared Sri Lanka’s standard time at Temple Trees yesterday evening.
