Sabaragamuwa Uni student brought to Colombo on President’s
instructions

The Sabaragamuwa University undergraduate who suffered shock and
developed speech difficulties after being subjected to ragging by senior
students, was brought to Colombo for treatment on the instructions of
President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Ruwan Prasanna Nammunige is a fourth year
student of the university and his parents sought Higher Education
Minister S B Dissanayake’s help when the Minister met the parents of 4th
year students of the university.
The Minister had promised that he would make every possible effort to
cure him and provide all facilities to enable him to continue his
studies.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa on being informed about the student has
directed Higher Education Minister S B Dissanayake to bring the student
to Colombo and ensure that he receives treatment.
The Minister also met the Mother of Second year student who was
responsible for ragging. Ruwan’s Mother narrated her son’s agonizing
story.
She on behalf of her son apologized to the Minister and the victim’s
mother.
Minister Dissanayake has made arrangement to provide all facilities
to the students and he also made a donation to Ruwan’s parents.
Ruwan has two sisters and his mother is an employee of a quarry. His
father is paralysed. The students who were responsible for ragging had
taken Ruwan home and threatened him not to tell anybody of his (Ruwan’s)
ordeal.
However, he was initially admitted to the Balangoda Hospital in
critical condition and was later transferred to the Ratnapura General
Hospital where he received treatment under Police protection.
Ruwan has not fully recovered though he returned home from Hospital. |
