Special trains for Vesak

Sri Lanka Railways has introduced a special train service in view of the Vesak Week for those travelling to Colombo for the Vesak celebrations. The special services will be in operation on May 25, 26 and 27 from Colombo Fort to Mahawa, Colombo Fort -Rambukkana, Colombo Fort - Aluthgama to Veyangoda, and Maradana to South Kalutara.

Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

[May 12 2013]

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

Lanka gears for tourism boom

Sri Lanka Tourism to fast track projects:

The public sector needs to play a major role in facilitating private sector investments in the tourism industry owing to their tremendous participation in the sector in the country, Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority Director General S Kalaiselvam said. “The tourism sector is driven by the private sector and facilitating private sector in the country will generate more revenue for the Government in terms of tax and employment opportunities for the locals,” he said.

Special hospital for elderly

A special hospital will be set up for the elderly, a Health Ministry spokesman said. Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena had taken this decision considering the rapid growth in the elderly population, the spokesman said. This hospital will cater only to the elderly similar to the Lady Ridgeway Hospital which treats only children, the spokesman said.
