Ayurveda Week from August 1 to 7
A National Ayurvedic Week has been declared from August 1 to 7 with
the aim of revitalizing the Indigenous Medicine System.
Popularizing indigenous medical methods among the public, creating
public opinion and reawakening of the medical process are the objectives
of declaring an Ayurvedic Week, Indigenous Medicine Minister Piyasena
Gamage said during a meeting at the BMICH on July 27. The Minister said
a wide range of programs are to be conducted during the week beginning
with the planting of herbal medicinal saplings by President Mahinda
Rajapaksa at the Presidential House premises in Kandy tomorrow at 9.00
Minister Gamage requested the public to plant a herbal medicinal
sapling to mark the occasion.
Exhibition at BMICH
The Vidulka Energy Week, the first ever National Energy Exhibition in
the country will be held from August 3 to August 8 at the BMICH.
The event will be inaugurated on August 3 by President Mahinda
Rajapaksa on the invitation of Power and Energy Minister Champika
Ranawaka. Vidulka is organized by the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy
Authority (SLSEA) in collaboration with the Power and Energy Ministry
with the financial assistance of private companies which engage in power
Illegal slaughter house raided
The Walana Police Anti Vice Squad has raided an illegal slaughter
house Monday at Samagi Mawatha, Welisara, Mahabaga and arrested five
suspects with 41 cattle.
Police Spokesman SP Prishantha Jayakody said Police seized 1,105 kgs
of beef not passed by the Public Health Inspector and arrested the
suspects. Among the 41 cattle there were 33 buffaloes and another eight

Leukaemia patient seeks help
Fathima Rikasa, a leukaemia patient, is urgently in need of surgical
intervention followed by blood transfusion.
She has been recommended treatment in India. Rikasa's father, S A

Dengue eradication in Mulleriyawa
A dengue eradication program will be held at Mulleriyawa North 501
grama niladhari division tomorrow from 9 a.m. It is organized by
Selalihini Mawatha Welfare and Death Donation Society, Society Secretary
Nimanthi Ranasinghe said.

Nalanda Ranaviru Upahara Ulela
The Ranaviru Upahara Ulela annually organized by Nalanda Junior Old
Boys Association will be held on August 2 at 3.30 p.m. opposite the
Nalanda College war heroes memorial statue.
Ranaviru Flag Week has also been organized to coincide with the
event. The first flag will be offered to President Mahinda Rajapaksa who
is also an old Nalandian, at Temple Trees on the same day at 10 a.m.
TV interview with Murali tomorrow
An interview with Muttiah Muralitharan, who retired from Test
cricket, will be simulcast on Rupavahini, Channel Eye and NTV tomorrow
at 9.45 pm. The interview will be conducted in all three languages.

Hotel owner learns lesson
A fine of Rs 10,000 with a six months imprisonment suspended for five
years was imposed on a Hotel owner at Kehelwatta for running a hotel
under unhygienic conditions by Panadura Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake.

Zahira Principal retires
T.K. Azoor, Principal Zahira College, Colombo will retire with effect
from August 6.
A roving third row forward during his heyday, he represented his alma
mater, Royal College for the Bradby Shield in 1972 under the captaincy
of the late Gamma Gunasekera.
Becoming the Principal of Zahira in July 2007, he served as a
Vice-President of the Sri Lanka Schools' Rugby Football Association from
2008 to date. In 2009 he was the Deputy President of the Western
Province Schools' Rugby Football Association as well.
While Zahira continued to maintain its supremacy in schools'
football, during his tenure, Zahira became league champions of Group C
in 2008 and were promoted to Group B of Division I of the U-20 Schools
Rugby League Tournament in 2009. Zahira became champions in Division II
cricket in 2008 and were promoted to Group D in Division I of the Sri
Lanka Schools' Cricket Association Under 19 Cricket Tournament.
Dr Sumathipala at Int'l Congress
Institute for Research and Development (IRD) Director and Kings
College London Senior Lecturer Dr Athula Sumathipala will deliver the
keynote address at the 11th International Congress on behavioural
Medicine to be held from August 4 at the Grand Hyatt in Washington USA.
The title of his talk will be Medically Unexplained Symptoms. Dr
Sumathipala is recognized as a world authority in this field and has
conducted research on this subject for the last 20 years.
