Special trains for Vesak

Sri Lanka Railways has introduced a special train service in view of the Vesak Week for those travelling to Colombo for the Vesak celebrations. The special services will be in operation on May 25, 26 and 27 from Colombo Fort to Mahawa, Colombo Fort -Rambukkana, Colombo Fort - Aluthgama to Veyangoda, and Maradana to South Kalutara.

Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

[May 12 2013]

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

 

 

Eighty percent of the construction work of the No. 2 saddle dam of the Moragahakanda Reservoir Project has been completed. This earth filled dam is 374 metres in length, height 21 metres and the width of the surface is seven metres. The main dam of the Moragahakanda Reservoir which is 65 metres in height will be completed in concrete whilst the No. 1 saddle dam which will be 42 metres in height is a rock filled dam. The Mahaweli Authority expects to complete work on the No. 2 saddle dam which is being completed utilising local funds and local expertise in about two months.

The Government has paid money to the Cuban Government to import BTI bacteria to Sri Lanka. It will arrive in Sri Lanka soon. According to the normal procedure, Cuba produced the bacteria after Sri Lanka placed the order and paid money.

International gold smuggling racket busted in India

Gold biscuits smuggled from Lanka seized:


The Air Intelligence Unit of the Customs Department at the Tiruchi airport, India have cracked an international gold smuggling racket and seized around five kgs of gold biscuits smuggled from Sri Lanka. The sleuths have arrested six Indian nationals for smuggling the gold worth Indian Rs 9 million Tuesday.
