Special trains for Vesak

Sri Lanka Railways has introduced a special train service in view of the Vesak Week for those travelling to Colombo for the Vesak celebrations. The special services will be in operation on May 25, 26 and 27 from Colombo Fort to Mahawa, Colombo Fort -Rambukkana, Colombo Fort - Aluthgama to Veyangoda, and Maradana to South Kalutara.

Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

Rubber production increases

More bearing land now:

Sri Lanka’s annual rubber production has increased by six percent to reach 137 million kilograms. It is expected to grow further with new rubber plantations this year. The Power and Energy Ministry will submit a proposal to the Public Utility Commission to look into possibilities of reducing electricity prices to benefit consumers as the Ministry will prevent electricity production costs from going up under its power sector reforms for the next five years.

All eyes on Murali

Sri Lanka’s legendary off spinner Muttiah Muralitharan was the cynosure of all eyes as he began his farewell Test match against India at the Galle International Stadium yesterday. As bad weather delayed the start of the match by half an hour, Muralitharan walked into the middle to a rousing welcome with warm congratulations from the Indian and Sri Lankan cricketers.

Colombo Municipal Council area:

Over one dengue patient per hour

CMC launches vigorous campaign:

About 20 dengue cases are reported a day within the Colombo Municipal Council limits, CMC Chief Medical Officer Dr. Pradeep Kariywasam said. This does not include dengue victims taking private and ayurveda treatment. Taking into account the unrecorded victims, it seems over one new dengue patient is found in the Colombo City every hour.

Suspect arrested in Pettah confesses to crime

The main suspect in the Eppawela quadruple murder has confessed to Police that he was forced into the crime since he was ill-treated by the victims. He also told police that he had thrown the axe used in the murder into the Nuwara Wewa while the key of the house was dropped into the well.
