Kandy pollution

(News- July 12)

Stop parking vehicles on all main streets ie. D.S.Senanayake and Kotugodalla Street. Stop lorries from entering or leaving the city from 5.30am to 7.30pm. Buses should not be allowed to stop at their will and pleasure. Traffic police should be detailed to implement this instead of harassing motorists for documents.

All this needs a strict disciplinarian for implementation who is not corrupt and could take decisions without any favour.

*****

It may help if we have less cars on the road. A move towards smaller cars might help.

Develop the railways.

How to stop drug abuse in Sri Lanka

(News- July 12)

Drug addicts won’t come willingly to be rehabilitated! First of all Sri Lanka should stop all drug selling points. Just give Rs 10,000, 5,000 (or even Rs 1000) to anyone who gives information on any person selling drugs. Believe me, the problem will be over within months!

Colombo litter bugs

(News- July 12)

This fining (even without a court appearance at first) should be extended to other simple forms of littering too, such as throwing garbage (paper, plastics, bus tickets etc around), as a majority of Sri Lankans have to be gradually imbued with a sense of discipline, as was done with smoking. Without starting with these visibly small things this country will never be able to become a paradise. Well, on top of all this there should be a smart and honest Police force too, that will really serve and protect. Anyway the Government can try.

For a start at least, remove the present khaki colonial uniform that they wear and go for a light- coloured top. If you do not want anything from the West, copy something from the Far East or the Middle East. If you can give a fairly smart dress for most of the Airmen at the Airport, why not give a smart decent one to these highly visible policemen too.

The Police higher-ups seem to be still living in the Colonial era, when the police force was created to instill fear in the minds of the common man. Time for them to come out of that mindset.

Fast food

(Features –July 15)

I read this article about dangers of fast food. I couldn’t agree any better. This fast food business is quite new to Sri Lanka with compared to the Western world.

Certain chemicals are added to food such as curries to boost the flavour and the research results are available to prove they are absolutely unhealthy.

One can say it many times but would the public listen, I am not quite sure. Most of these present day working women have no idea as to how to cook.

So the solution is fast food. Fairly recently I was in a queue at a fast food take away to take some hoppers.

I saw two little boys about 10 and 12 also in the queue asking for chicken fried rice. I was thinking it is not quite

healthy to eat this fried rice but what can they do if their parents cannot cook? I must tell you that cooking rice is absolutely easy if done in a scientific manner.
