Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

 

Water cut in Fort and Pettah today

[May 11 2013]

A 12-hour water cut will be imposed today to Sunday morning in the Colombo Fort and Pettah areas, National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWS&DB) sources said. The water cut will be imposed from 8 pm today to 8 am tomorrow.

 

Several luxury vehicles seized

Sri Lanka Customs seized several luxury vehicles brought to the country on a false import declaration to avoid paying higher taxes. Customs spokesman Lesly Gamini said his department’s sleuths seized two cars and one van which were fraudulently declared as excavators.

The 2013 GCE Advanced Level examination will be held from August 5 to 31 while the Grade 5 Scholarship exam is scheduled to be held on August 25, Examinations chief said.

BoC opens London Bank

Licence for lending operations:

The Bank of Ceylon London branch will be turned in to a fully fledged bank with its official re-launch on August 12. The Bank of Ceylon (UK Ltd) will enable full banking operations and concentrate more on deposits and lending.

Govt purchases 43 percent Emirates shares:

Sri Lankan fully national

The Government has become the sole owner of SriLankan Airlines as it has purchased all shares of the Emirates recently. The Government has purchased 43 percent of shares from Emirates and its share ownership has increased to 94.6 percent. The balance 5.4 percent shares belong to the SriLankan Airlines employees.

Disappeared teen’s body found in jungle

Police arrest alleged boyfriend:

A 16-year-old girl who disappeared from her home was found dead after 11 days in Morawewa, Trincomalee yesterday morning. The girl’s alleged boyfriend was arrested. When the suspect was in police custody, he had managed to escape the police. Due to this a tense situation was created with the villagers protesting the police. But later, the police re-arrested the suspect on a tip off given by the villagers.

NFF to stage fast-unto-death

National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader Wimal Weerawansa yesterday reiterated that the party members will stage a fast-unto-death protest campaign opposite the UN office if the panel appointed by it to advise UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Sri Lanka is not withdrawn.
