Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

 

Water cut in Fort and Pettah today

[May 11 2013]

A 12-hour water cut will be imposed today to Sunday morning in the Colombo Fort and Pettah areas, National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWS&DB) sources said. The water cut will be imposed from 8 pm today to 8 am tomorrow.

 

Several luxury vehicles seized

Sri Lanka Customs seized several luxury vehicles brought to the country on a false import declaration to avoid paying higher taxes. Customs spokesman Lesly Gamini said his department’s sleuths seized two cars and one van which were fraudulently declared as excavators.

 

ALs from Aug 5 to 31

The 2013 GCE Advanced Level examination will be held from August 5 to 31 while the Grade 5 Scholarship exam is scheduled to be held on August 25, Examinations chief said.

Chambers seek industry friendly budget

The Government will present a budget for 2010 today. The budget for 2011 will be presented in November as usual. This budget will present policies and principles that will govern the present Government during the current tenure of the President and the Parliament. Restaurant drama takes new twist

Police said the Indian national who was reported missing while serving at the Big Banana Restaurant at Stafford Road, Kirullapone was murdered at a nearby house owned by the restaurant owner and the body transported in a double cab before it was dumped in the sea at Mundalama.

During last three years :

Over 70 percent of foreign funded projects implemented in EP

The Government focused special emphasis on the Eastern Province by implementing over 70 percent of foreign funded projects during the last three years, said Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa. Minister Rajapaksa said the all other provinces in the country implemented 30 percent of all foreign funded projects.

Cheap pleasure with high risks for Beedi smokers

Authorities yesterday voiced concern over the growing number of Beedi smokers in the country although the number of Cigarette smokers have rapidly decreased in the recent past. Excise Commissioner General Wasantha Hapuarachchi said that the use of White Cigarettes (Sudu beedi) and the normal beedi was quite prevalent with low income earners.
