Special trains for Vesak

Sri Lanka Railways has introduced a special train service in view of the Vesak Week for those travelling to Colombo for the Vesak celebrations. The special services will be in operation on May 25, 26 and 27 from Colombo Fort to Mahawa, Colombo Fort -Rambukkana, Colombo Fort - Aluthgama to Veyangoda, and Maradana to South Kalutara.

Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

GDP records 7.1 percent growth in Q1

The economic output of Sri Lanka as measured by Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the first quarter (Q1) (January-March), of 2010 at constant (2002) prices is estimated at Rs. 643,539 million as against Rs. 601,084 million in the first quarter of 2009, registering a 7.1 percent growth, the Census and Statistics Department said.

Lankan teens computer savvy

Sri Lanka’s younger generation is becoming increasingly computer savvy with the 15 to 19 age group topping the literacy ratio with 47.6 percent followed by the 20-24 age group 40.6 percent and the least literate being the 60-69 age group with 2.8 percent, a Census and Statistics Department survey revealed.

Six killed, 10 injured in lorry-van crash

Six people were killed and 10 others injured in a lorry-van collision near the Deduru Oya bridge along the Kurunegala-Dambulla main road yesterday. Among the dead were a young couple and their only child and three children aged two, four and six. The accident took place around 2.20 a.m. Ten people injured were admitted to the Kurunegala Hospital.

International Buddhist University in Sanchi on Lanka’s request

An International Buddhist University will be established in Sanchi, India in the near future in accordance with a request made by Sri Lanka, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan told reporters in Colombo yesterday.
