Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

 

Water cut in Fort and Pettah today

[May 11 2013]

A 12-hour water cut will be imposed today to Sunday morning in the Colombo Fort and Pettah areas, National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWS&DB) sources said. The water cut will be imposed from 8 pm today to 8 am tomorrow.

 

Several luxury vehicles seized

Sri Lanka Customs seized several luxury vehicles brought to the country on a false import declaration to avoid paying higher taxes. Customs spokesman Lesly Gamini said his department’s sleuths seized two cars and one van which were fraudulently declared as excavators.

 

ALs from Aug 5 to 31

The 2013 GCE Advanced Level examination will be held from August 5 to 31 while the Grade 5 Scholarship exam is scheduled to be held on August 25, Examinations chief said.

Govt to buy Shell Gas

* Cabinet OK granted for negotiations

* Privatised State assets to be re-vested

The Government intends to purchase majority stakes in the Shell Gas Lanka Ltd. The multinational company, Shell bought the State owned LP Gas monopoly concern few years back. The decision followed representations made by Shell Gas to the Government that they intend to exit from LP Gas business in Sri Lanka due to restructuring of its business worldwide, Mass Media and Communications Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said.

Britain applauds appointment of Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission

Parliamentary Under-secretary for the UK Foreign Office, Alistair Burt applauded the Sri Lankan government for acting on their promise to the UN and setting up the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission. He said British Prime Minister David Cameron has written to President Mahinda Rajapaksa to express British support for this Commission.

New engine booster introduced

A dry cell hydrogen - engine enhancement equipment which uses water invented by W.A. Keerthi R. de Silva was launched at the Government Information Department auditorium yesterday. According to de Silva, the new equipment saves petrol or diesel upto 40 to 50 percent and also increases the engine performance.

Turtles doomed in Lanka

Turtles in Sri Lanka are threatened with extinction due to callous human activities in the coastal belt, Turtle Conservation Project Chairman Thushan Kapurusinghe said . The large-scale coral destruction for lime production has deprived the sea turtles of their natural rich food areas in the sea.
