finals of the Inter-District Hockey Tournament organised by
the Ministry of Sports of Central Province and played at the Nandimithra

At half time Kandy District led 2-0. It turned out to be a grueling
as both teams reputed for their stick work started off aggressively and
some very good move were seen at the early stages of the game.
In the 16th minute the Kandy women drew first blood when centre
forward Chathurika Wijesuriya got past two opposing defenders and took
play to the top of the semi circle and when the defence converged she
sent a short past to the well positioned left extreme Maneesha
Dissanayake who sounded the boards. Ten minutes later Kandy women
stickers sounded the boards again off a penalty corner centre forward
Chathurika Wijesuriya took the hit and left extreme Maneesha Dissanayake
collecting the ball pushed it in an attempt to score which was stopped
by Matale’s custodian. But left inside Madushani Jayanetti scored off
the rebound.
The second half sew the Matale team making some good attempts to
break Kandy’s defence to gain control of the match.
But a well fortified defence put up by Kandy thwarted all their
attempts and helped them to retain their two goal lead which they gained
in the initial half. Indika Jayawardena and S.N. Jayasinghe umpired. |
