Special trains for Vesak

Sri Lanka Railways has introduced a special train service in view of the Vesak Week for those travelling to Colombo for the Vesak celebrations. The special services will be in operation on May 25, 26 and 27 from Colombo Fort to Mahawa, Colombo Fort -Rambukkana, Colombo Fort - Aluthgama to Veyangoda, and Maradana to South Kalutara.

Man with heroin gets RI, fine

A man who was found guilty to the charges of possessing heroin and trading them was sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by Galle High Court Judge K B K Hiriburegama .

 

Technical college for Mannar

A new technical college is to be established in Mannar to promote technical education in the Eastern Province. The Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry and UNICEF recently signed the memorandum of understanding in this regard.

 

Watcher slays landlady

[May 15 2013]

A 62 year old watcher of a coconut estate in Alawwa was taken into custody by Alawwa Police in connection with the murder of a woman, the owner of the estate by stabbing her with a knife. The woman was identified as Nalini Dissanayake, 48, a mother of one.

 

Roads closed for Victory Day rehearsals

The Galle Face Circular Road and the Circular Road at the Presidential Secretariat will be closed until May 18 as the area is assigned for rehearsals of the Armed Forces preparing to mark Victory Day on May 18, a release issued by the Media Centre for National Security said.

 

SE university academic sessions begin on May 27

The academic session of the first semester of the Southern Eastern University for all students of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Faculty of Management and Commerce, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Languages, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Engineering will commence on May 27, the university said in a release.

 

Mahogany logs seized

Five suspects transporting 52 Mahogany logs in a truck without a permit were apprehended by the Kandy Police Frauds Unit at Attaragama, Katugastota.

President tells Ministers, Deputy Ministers:

Be dedicated

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday appealed to new Cabinet Ministers and Deputy Ministers to dedicate themselves to fulfill the people’s aspirations. Addressing the newly appointed Cabinet and Deputy Ministers at the Presidential Secretariat after the swearing-in ceremony, President Rajapaksa stressed that the masses gave an overwhelming majority to the Government with much expectations and they need to be accomplished to fulfill the people’s aspirations.

Constitutional reforms first priority

The Government’s first priority will be to add reforms to the Constitution to accelerate development programs as mentioned in the Mahinda Chinthana Idiri Dekma policy program, SLFP General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena said. Changes to the proportional representation electoral system will be brought to create opportunities for voters to elect their representative from their own electorates, he added.

Old and new faces in new Cabinet

The first post war Cabinet was sworn in before President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday. Thirty seven UPFA members including Senior Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa and NFF Leader Wimal Weerawansa are included in the Cabinet.
