Conference and exhibition
The Inaugural Halaal Conference and Exhibition 2010, designed to
discuss aspects of the concept of Halaal will be held on February 16 and
17 at the Galadari Hotel. The event is organized by the UTO EDU-CONSULT
Academics from Singapore, Malaysia and South Africa will participate.
Holy prophet Mohamed celebrations
Galle Muslim Cultural Association will celebrate the Holy Prophet
Mohamed (PBUH) Birth Day for the 47th time with a series of religious
programs. These lecture programs will commence on February 16 and
conclude on February 26.
There will be lectures on each day during this period by eminent
moulavis on various topics bordering on Islam.
This lecture program will be held at the Meera Mosque, Galle Fort
from 8.30 p.m. to 10.00 p.m. on each day.
Workshop for student-bhikkus
A one-day workshop has been organizes for Pirivena bhikkhu students
at Vidya Rivindra Pirivena at Gampaha on 17 February from 7.30 a.m. to 5
p.m. under the patronage of Chief Incumbent of London Thames Viharaya,
Ven. Pallegama Somarathna Thera.
Several leading Buddhist scholars will be delivering lectures and the
resource persons will be Prof. Sumanapala Gamanagoda, Anagarika
Dharmasekera, Rev. Kottapala Amarakirthi thera and Rev. Koswatte
Ven. Galigamuwe Gnanadeepa Thera will conduct Dhamma sermons and a
meditation program on February 21 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the All
Ceylon Buddhist Congress Hall, Bauddhaloka Mawatha.
Buddhist panel discussion
The next Buddhist panel discussion of the Colombo YMBA will be held
on Sunday February 21 at 10.00 a.m. at its Borella building on
‘Significance of Dukkha in Buddhism’. The panellists are Dr. Basil de
Silva and Anil Goonewardane with Rajah Kuruppu as moderator. All are
Prof. Raja de Alwis will deliver a public Buddhist talk in English on
“An Introduction to Vipassana Bhavana” at a meeting of the Servants of
the Buddha Society on Saturday, February 20 at 4.30 p.m. at the Maitri
Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya.
Man beaten to death
A man was beaten to death by his brother using a pole on Sunday
morning at Sangamiththa Mawatha, Anuradhapura. Police spokesman SP
Prishantha Jayakody said it was reported that a 45 year old man was
beaten to death by his younger brother in the area around 11.30am.
“There were long standing dispute between brothers. A heated argument
led one to kill the other,” he added. The suspect fled the area.
Anuradhapura police are investigating.
Grenade explosion kills two students in Jaffna
Two students were killed and six seriously injured when a grenade
they were playing exploded in Jaffna. The group of students attached to
the Colombothurai Hindu Vidyalaya were returning from school when the
mishap occurred. According to Police Spokesman SP Priyashanth Jayakody,
these students in the age group of 5–10 were trying to play with an
object which they found on the road side when the explosion occurred.
The injured were admitted to the Jaffna General Hospital.
Rabi-Unil-Awwal Hijri 1431 month begins
The Colombo Grand Mosque in a press release issued yesterday said
that it was decided to commence the Islamic month of Rabi-Unil-Awwal
1431, from the evening of Monday, February 15, 2010.
Death due to assault
A middle aged person on the Katugastota Road, Kandy suspected to be
assaulted by an unknown person died on the admission to the Kandy
Hospital on Sunday.
According to the Police sources, the victim, Koondeniyagedara
Seneviratne (40) had been found fallen bleeding near the railway tunnel
at Mahaiyawa by his family members on Sunday. The postmortem on the
remains was to be held yesterday. The Kandy Police are investigating.
