ICC Under 19 World Cup Super League:

Banuka (79) steers Sri Lanka into semi-finals

An outstanding batting display by Sri Lanka set the side up for a comprehensive 146-run victory over South Africa in their ICC Under 19 World Cup Super League quarter-final match worked off at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval in Christchurch yesterday.

Sent in to bat, Sri Lanka were full of purpose and batted positivity as they went about constructing their innings to pile up a formidable 293 for 8 from their 50 overs and to complete a convincing victory at the end.

Man of the Match Banuka Rajapakse again showed his immense talent, always prepared to hit over the top and driving elegantly on the off side. He top scored with 79 off 78 balls including ten boundaries in his attractive innings.

Rumesh Buddika was an excellent foil for Rajapaksa and the two left-handers put on 90 runs in 16 overs. Kithruwan Vithange, with 45 off 50 balls, and Akshu Fernando, 28 from 30, continued the aggressive Sri Lankan approach.

Skipper Chatura Peiris hit a quick 19 and another excellent cameo from Danishka Gunathillike, slashing 24 from 16 balls, entertained the crowd to a dazzling display of bold hitting. Sri Lanka ended their 50 overs with 293 for eight.

In reply, South Africa had lost two wickets in the sixth over, when rain fell and briefly sent the players from the field. Their target was reduced by two runs but it made little difference to the South African chase.

Josh Richards played some excellent cover drives as he and Colin Ackerman attempted to reignite the South African reply. Their 50 partnership came up off 56 balls but once Ackerman and Richards departed, any hope for South Africa was extinguished as Sri Lanka never let up their vice-like grip on a semi-final spot.

Sri Lanka’s fielding display in very cold and sometimes windy conditions was impeccable, and left-arm fast bowler Charith Jayampathi captured four of the top order batsmen, applying the finishing touches to a victory that his batting team mates set up earlier in the day.

Sri Lanka will now play Australia in the second Super League semi-final on Wednesday.
