Although violence in itself is an age-old
phenomenon, and violence against women in particular is widespread,
cutting across boundaries of culture, religious conviction,
ethnicity and nationality, the violence against women agenda is
fairly new. It was only about 16 years ago that violence against
women was explicitly acknowledged as a human rights violation at the
World Conference on Human Rights in Vienna.

On de-coding the dress-code
I am thinking about dresses. Appropriate
dresses. Dress codes. I’ve seen this on invitation cards: ‘Dress:
Smart/Casual’. I have always wondered what’s ‘smart’ and what’s
‘casual’. Does the slash imply that you can either be ‘smart’ or
‘casual’ but not both? Beats me. I have concluded that I am too much
of a godaya to be able to fathom these subtleties.
