She was born in Kondavil, Jaffna and studied from Year 1 to A/L at Hindu Ladies College. She was a college captain and also participated in sports and other extra curricular activities.

Her father K. Sivapathasundaram is an electrical engineer and mother a dental surgeon. Her elder sister is a doctor while her brother is an engineering student at the Moratuwa University.
