Defence Secretary acknowledges crucial role played by Signals’ Corps

Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa acknowledged the crucial role played by Signallers during 30 years of combating terrorism; especially in the last 4 years. He paid tribute and valued his young officer days’ seniors in the Signals, who instilled in him certain personal qualities such as integrity and teamwork that he believes to have positively influenced his military career and civilian life too. He also assured the continued State involvement in rehabilitation of service personnel wounded in action and the welfare of family members of the fallen heroes and the serving military personnel.

Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa was the chief guest at the Signals’ Corps 66th anniversary celebrations. He was felicitated during the Signal Officers Get-together on November 21. The occasion turned out to be an ideal reunion for the Defence Secretary with his former Regiment since he commenced his military career as a Second Lieutenant of the Sri Lanka Signals Corps on May 25, 1972.

Army Commander Lt. General Jagath Jayasuriya and Chief of Staff, Major General Mendaka Samarasinghe were guests of honour during the occasion.

The Sri Lanka Signals Corps was celebrating its 66 years of glory in the backdrop of the historic victory over terrorism when the rank and file joined in a series of events from November 19 to 21.

The Signals Corps spent the last 66 years with significant achievements in the fields of military communications, land operations of all magnitudes, peace support operations in Haiti, disaster management, and other activities such as sports and entertainment. The Signals Corps is contributing to the Army’s efforts in ongoing stability and reconstruction operations.
