India satisfied with welfare measures for Tamils of Indian origin

Indian High Commissioner Ashok K. Kantha has said that he is satisfied with the measures taken by the Government towards the welfare of the Tamils of Indian origin living in Sri Lanka.

The High Commissioner expressed these sentiments at a meeting held with the Plantation Industries Minister D.M. Jayaratne in Colombo recently.

Minister D.M. Jayaratne said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa's Mahinda Chintana concept has succeeded in ensuring a high standard of living among the estate population and added that the concept of Tamils of Indian origin has been done away with and they have been integrated into Sri Lankan society.

Indian Government too has rendered a great service to Sri Lanka in the area of social development. Its contribution to end the war has been tremendous, the Minister said. The High Commissioner has said that it was important to take steps to promote the social and economic development between the two countries.
