Events to mark SJH Silver Jubilee

A series of events would take place starting from tomorrow to December 1 to mark the Silver Jubilee of the Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital, Sri Jayawardenepura Hospital Director Lakshman de Lanerolle told the Daily News yesterday.

A medical clinic for the community in the vicinity of the hospital will be held at the Sidhartha Vidyalaya, Thalapathpitiya, tomorrow from 8 am to 3 pm. Surgeons, Doctors and nurses of the Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital from different units will participate at this clinic. Patients will be treated free of charge, he said.

He said a nutritionist too will be attending the medical clinic and the deserving people would get a packet of nutrition food which contains grains sugar, milk powder donated by a consultant.

An all night pirith chanting on November 27 followed by heel dana on Saturday 28, for 26 members of the Buddhist clergy.

The annual scholarship awards for the Grade Five children of the staff members would take place on December 1, Dr. Lanerolle said.

Children who passed the Year Five examination would get a cash reward of Rs. 1,500 and the 25 children who secured the highest marks at the examination would get Rs. 2,500 as reward, he noted.

Language course for BIA staff

The Government has taken action to start a foreign language training program to Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) staff, Ports and Aviation Minister Chamal Rajapaksa said.

“The Bandaranaike International Airport is like the mirror of the country. So it is necessary to enrich its staff with multi language proficiency. It will help to get more attraction of foreigners and provide a better service to them in all aspects,” the Minister told the press yesterday.

“We decided to teach English, Tamil, Hindi,Chinese, Japanese, French, Russian and German to them,” he said.


LTTE mines recovered

A Navy Intelligence team in the east succeeded in recovering 300 nos of LTTE made Anti Personnel Mines from the Peraru Jungles in Pankulam, on November 15. Another 300 nos of LTTE made Jony Thamilan 99 fuses were found at the same location.

The items were found packed and buried in plastic barrels.

Naval troops involved in the search operations have been successful in recovering warlike materials.

The Navy has taken extra measures to recover these remnants of war before they cause harm to civilians who have begun to return to their original villages and resume life anew.

Demining workers hurt

Two landmine clearing workers were admitted to hospital after a booby trap exploded in Manippurkulam, Vedithaltivu, on Thursday.

Police spokesman SSP I.M. Karunaratna said the incident occurred when a group of workers were removing mines. The injured were rushed to Anuradhapura and Vavuniya hospitals. RJ


Woman, 42, killed in Ragama

A woman was hacked to death by unidentified gangsters at her residence in Thotupola road, Ragama, yesterday.

Five masked suspects stormed a house in the Kandana area armed with sharp weapons and attacked the woman at around 6 a.m., police spokesman SSP I.M. Karunaratna said.

Niranjala Edirivira (42) was hacked to death and her neck was severed with sharp weapons. He said the victim’s husband is working abroad. Ragama police are investigating.


Sai Baba b'day celebrations

Sri Sathya Sai Sewa Samithi of No. 7, Namal Mawatha, Sirimal Uyana, Ratmalana will celebrate the 84th birthday celebrations of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba at the Centre with a special Bhajan program on November 23 from 5 p.m.

The Samithi has organised a special lunch for Deaf and Blind School students today.


Book launch

Karunadasa Suriyarachchi's latest novel Kalu Donkaraya will be launched at a ceremony at the Mahaweli Centre Colombo on November 24 at 3 p.m. Gamini Sumanasekara will preside. The book The Dark Star an English translation of the novel Andakara Tharakawa by Edmond Jayasuriya will also be launched on this day.

The 18th AGM of the Old Anandian's Centenary Group will be held at the Ananda College Colombo centenary building auditorium on Sunday, November 22 at 10 a.m. said Secretary of the group Neelaka Aluthge.

The 54th AGM of the Sri Lanka Press Association will be held on November 28 at Hotel Ranmuthu, Kollupitiya at 9 a.m.

The 37th General Meeting of the Armour Veterans Association will be held today at 9 a.m. at Rock House Camp, Mutwal, Colombo 15. Gen S.C. Ranatunga VSV will be the chief guest.


Graduation ceremony

The Salon Ranmali and Academy of Hair and Beauty Culture will hold its graduation ceremony in association with the National Vocational Training Authority to award certificates and medals to 200 trainees who completed courses in hair dressing and beauty culture and qualified for Diploma, NVQ Level 4, and AQF Level 3.

The ceremony will be held at the Bishop College, Auditorium Colombo on November 22 at 1 p.m. under the patronage of Vocational and Technical Training Minister Piyasena Gamage.


Modern Christmas story

A modern Christmas story presented by the Bethel Chapel Choir will be held on December 11 at 6.30 p.m. at 7, Alfred House Gardens, Kollupitiya.
