Appalling cruelty

A lorry transporting 21 buffaloes without a valid permit was seized
by Police at Kahawatta on Thursday night.
The driver and cleaner were taken into custody.
Police said 11 buffaloes had died of suffocation at the time of
detection.
Snatch thieves disappear with cash, jewellery
Two men wearing helmets and masks had snatched a handbag containing
Rs. 3,031,600 and jewellery from a woman returning from a bank as she
was alighting from a threewheeler taxi near her house at Pinwatta
Panadura and sped away, according to a complaint made to the Panadura
police by the victim. Investigations are continuing.
Robbery at MV
Puttalam Group Corr.
Property and equipment worth Rs 19,000 was robbed from the office
room of the Aracchikathuwa Attanganaya Maha Vidyalaya on November 10
night by thieves who had entered the room from the roof according to a
complaint made by Principal D.M. Ananda Kumara.
Chilaw police are investigating.
Church blood donation
The Evangelical Society of All Saints Church, Pettah will hold a
blood donation campaign tomorrow at 174, Bodhiraja Mawatha, Colombo 11
from 10 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.
This is to be held in view of the 100th Anniversary of the church.
Grand Feast
The annual grand feast and Shazuliyyah Mashaikh Mouloodh Manakih
Thamam of the Panadura Thotawatte Rawlathul Athkiyya Jummah Mosque will
be held at 6.30 pm today.
Sithijayen Obbata at Royal College
The Art Circle of Royal College, Colombo will hold its 14th All
Island Annual Art Exhibition, titled Sithijayen Obbata (beyond the
horizon) at the National Art Gallery on November 14 and 15 from 9.00
a.m. to 6.00 p.m.
Rampala Memorial lecture
The 'Eng. B.D. Rampala Memorial Lecture 2009', organized by the
Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL), on the theme 'Railway
Development and Intermodal Cargo Transport', will be delivered by
Retired General Manager of Railway W.K.B. Weragama at the IESL's
Wimalasurendra Auditorium, in Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7, on November
16 (Monday), at 5.30 p.m.
Cashew cultivation in Galewela
Matale district group corr.
The Sri Lanka Cashew Corporation will launch a cashew cultivation
program in the Galewela Divisional Secretariat area.
In the first stage 25 acres will be utilised with the participation
of 78 growers while a high yield cashew variety will be distributed
among growers.
Allocations for electricity projects

Allocations have been granted to the Ceylon Electricity Board by the
Nation Building Ministry under the Rural Development Program for 433
proposed Electricity Projects in 14 electorates in Kurunegala.
Drug addicts increasing in Dambulla
Matale district group corr.
Addiction to ganja is increasing in Dambulla to alarming proportions
causing hardships to the public.
Police along with the Matale district excise unit have rounded up
some places and arrested three persons with 11,000 mg of ganja. They
were produced before Dambulla magistrate and District Judge Nimal
Ranaweera and fined Rs. 17,000.
Schools to be separated into boys and girls

The Peradeniya Junior Secondary Vidyalaya and the Peradeniya
Wimaladharmasuriya Vidyalaya which are mixed schools at present will be
transformed into a boys school and girls school respectively.
The Central Provincial Councils Education Ministry is considering
this prosibility following recommendations made by Education officials
to attract more students to there schools to ease the pressure on
schools in the Kandy city, said Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake.
Shortage of drugs

The shortage of drugs at the Government district hospital at
Menikhinna in the Kundasale Divisional Secretariat area, has
inconvenienced out-door patients. More than 300 out-door patients visit
this hospital daily for treatment.
Roads lack standard

Concrete roads in Kataragama have not been constructed to proper
standards, the residents in the area have alleged. They say these roads
are uneven and not properly levelled. Therefore vehicles travelling on
the roads are liable to skid off. Gutters of either side of the roads
have not been constructed. Some roads look like dams as they have been
constructed above the land level and these lands are inundated on rainy
days.
