New radio drama on YATV
Young Asia Television (YATV), dubbed the ‘eyes of Asia’ has decided
to embark on a new adventure with the launch of a new radio drama
series. Named Kannagipura/Kannagipuram, the innovative, entertaining and
action oriented creation will go on air today (August 5).

It is made available to both the Sinhala and Tamil listeners on
Wednesdays and Fridays on SLBC’s national, commercial and regional
channels. A music CD with the bilingual theme song of the radio drama
series has also been released to the local radio stations to mark its
The tale of Kannagipura/Kannagipuram unfolds in a fictional Eastern
village. Here youths take the prominence in matters and see that events
run smoothly in life.
They bring waves of change along with romance, drama, action and
conflict. It spotlights on the true situation of how youths of diverse
personalities and backgrounds strive to live together and brings out
many thought provoking themes to light. It also highlights the
importance of tolerance, co-existence and respect among individuals in
the community. Life is a challenge and it is up to each one and every
person to make the wise decision to better his or her life.
The program is another part of YATV’s bid to give Asian youth a
meaningful voice and highlight issues of vital importance to the region.
The script of Kannagipura/Kannagipuram surfaced from the winners of a
scriptwriting competition held in January.
They worked with the production team of YATV to develop the plot and
divide the incidents into episodes. Together the team brought about new
concepts and insights to the tale by picturing the events taking place
in the local setup. In addition listener groups had been set up in nine
districts of the country to provide feedback on events. Consultant of
the project Francis Rolt worked with the group by providing technical
SLBC networks City FM, Rajarata FM, Kandurata FM, Wayamba Handa,
Kothmale FM, Tendral FM, Perai FM and Jaffna Service will broadcast the
program Wednesdays and Fridays from 6.45 p.m. to 7 p.m. with the
exception of Tendral FM which will broadcast Kannagipura/Kannagipuram at
5.45 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The program is especially targeted at youths between 19 to 29 years.
However listeners from all ages will find the radio drama series
interesting, entertaining and a refreshing change from the day to day
