Population census in 2011

The Census and Statistics Department (CSD) will conduct a population and houses survey in July, 2011.

According to a Departmental official CSD usually conducts this survey every ten years. The last survey was conducted in 2001.

The Department hopes to prepare maps at Grama Niladari level except in districts in Northern and Eastern Provinces.

Preparation of maps in the Grama Niladari Divisions of Kesbewa Divisional Secretariat has already commenced, the official added.

The Department hopes to deploy its officials attached to District Secretariats to conduct this survey. Fourteen committees have been appointed to prepare a questionnaire and data-sheets and an additional Operational Committee will supervise their activities.

Commenting on the future survey, Census and Statistics Department Director H.R. Gunasekera told the Daily News the updated statistics on population and houses will be more helpful to the Government in Public Administration and policy decisions.
