Kandy should run for a big score
S.M. Jiffrey ABDEEN Kandy Sports Corr.
Defending Caltex league champions Kandy Sports Club will be on show
for the first time in Colombo this season when they take on Police
Sports Club in their League rugby tournament match to be played at
Police Park, Colombo today. The kick off is at 4.30 p.m.
Kandy will go into this match without the services of scrum half
Saliya Kumara and the hard running centre three quarter Gayan Weeraratne
who sustained a serious nasal injury in the last match and is under
medical attention. Flanker and last year's skipper Sean Wijesinghe
should add strength to the third row.
Unlike in other years, Kandy is not having its own way and their one
way traffic of posting big scores is missing this season. In the matches
played so far, they have still not scored above 40 points and they are
losing valuable bonus points which is very valuable in the final
reckoning.
Having a galaxy of national stars, they need better motivation to
come out with better performance.
Their centre three quarter is the best among the clubs and having
players of the calibre of Sanjeewa Jayasinghe, Pradeep Liyanage, Gayan
Weeraratne, Sameera Silva, Mohammed Sheriff and manning the last line of
defence is strong built runner Radhika Hettiarachchi, another winger who
has been now playing as full back should come out well today. Fazil
Marija as stand off is the finest produced by Kandy who is one player
who has been instrumental in scoring the tries.
Rugby fans in Kandy believe that Kandy's performance todate is not
good enough and they have two tough matches ahead against CH & FC and CR
& FC and they should win both to keep their chances in retaining their
title this season.
The cops have been not performaning well this season and Kandy may
win this match but the margin of win is important with a larger number
of tries. |
