To use heavy weapons on NFZ:

Was it UNP policy?

Was it the policy of the UNP that heavy weapons should be used in the No Fire Zone in the North as stated by Puttalam district Parliamentarian Range Bandara recently.

The UNP should explain to the public and the international community whether his statement reflected the UNP policy, Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene said at a press conference held at his Ministry yesterday.

The policy of the Government was clear, it stopped the use of heavy weapons as it had to protect the civilians held hostage by the LTTE.

Whether the international community asked us or not the Government protected and safeguarded the Tamil civilians as they were citizens of our country, he noted.
