New laws to stop awarding of 'bogus' honorary titles

New laws to take action against persons and institutions which award false honorary titles will be introduced soon, Plantation Industries Minister D.M. Jayaratne said.

The Minister as Chairman of the Committee appointed to look into the matter, said a final decision will be taken at the Cabinet meeting today.

Based on the committee recommendations, regulations will have to passed in Parliament so that action could be taken against these unscrupulous persons and institutions.

"There is an increase in the awarding of bogus titles. This will disgrace the country internationally. It is tragic that awards are bestowed upon unqualified persons whereas there are highly qualified persons in the country who deserve such honours. This is unprecedented in other parts of the world," Minister Jayaratne said.
