Work on Northern railway line begins

The Government will commence the reconstruction of the Northern
railway line from Vavuniya to Kankesanthurai via Jaffna and the railway
stations in between under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa
on March 19.

A National Secretariat will also be set up in the Presidential
Secretariat to streamline this project.
A Transport Ministry spokesman told the Daily News that the total
estimated cost of this project would be Rs.5 billion
He said the Railways Department will commence the reconstruction work
of the railway track from Vavuniya while the Army will carry out the
reconstruction work from Jaffna on March 19.
The Railways Department and the Army are expected to complete the
project. The Railways Department will provide technical assistance.
All Sri Lankans can join the project by providing manpower and wealth
to reconstruct the line.
Meanwhile, people in Hambantota have pledged to extend their support
to rebuild the railway station in Jaffna on a special request by
President Rajapaksa.
