Remnants extracted from ancient ship

Remnants of an ancient ship has been excavated from the sea at
Godawaya, Hambantota.
These were found about five kilometres away in the sea, at a depth of
one hundred and ten feet. Two friends who dived in search of Oysters had
seen these pieces of the ancient ship and informed the Galle unit of the
Department of Archaeology about their findings.
Following the information, divers of the Department of Archaeology
conducted an investigation and found various items. Among those found
have been pottery items.
Deputy Director General Dr. Mohan Abeyratna told the Daily News that
he believes that some more precious items could be found in the area and
such excavation activities will be conducted further.
Director General Central Cultural Fund Prof. Sudarsana Seneviratne is
supervising the work. |
