Woman on way to court killed by elephant

A 48-year-old woman who was on her way to the Kandy High Court to be
present as a witness in a case was attacked and trampled to death by a
wild elephant en-route.
A report from Alagamuva, Naula on the Matale-Dambulla road said that
U.G. Podimenike of Alagamuwa was attacked by a wild elephant while she
was walking along a by road with her husband and two others at dawn on
20 November 2008.
Naula Police are investigating.
Her body was taken to the Kongahavela hospital for a sudden death
inquiry which was conducted, the report said. It added, the deceased's
husband and the two others injured during this incident were treated at
the Kongahavela hospital.
The victims were on their way to Kandy to attend a judicial inquiry.
The wild elephant had appeared while they were walking along a by
road to the main road to board a bus to Kandy.
Peasants of Alagamuva and several other villages off Naula are
plagued by the wild elephant menace and this is just another incident
involving wild elephants.
JVP councillor pleads not guilty

Central Provincial Council JVP Leader, Samansiri Fernando was charged
yesterday before Kandy Additional Magistrate Sandun Vithana for
assaulting and causing grievous hurt to a veterinary surgeon named
Sumith Wanniarachchi in April 2008.
When the suspect pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against
him, the Magistrate fixed the trial for March 06, 2009 and notified him
to appear on that date.

A couple believed to be husband and wife were taken into custody with
counterfeit notes to totalling Rs. 14,000 at the Kandy Central Market.
The suspects have been arrested while purchasing goods at the Kandy
Market. Investigations revealed that the 28-year-old man is a resident
of Battaramulla while his wife is from Mahawela, Matale.
The suspects told Police that the notes were given to them by a
person in robes.
Sangamitta Day commemoration
The Sangamitta Day commemoration will be held on December 12 at 10.00
a.m. at the All Ceylon Women's Buddhist Congress, 400, Bauddhaloka
Mawatha, Colombo 7. Dr. Lorna Devaraja will be the chief guest.
SLIP Computer graphic course
The Sri Lanka Institute of Printing established in 1984 will
introduce a study programme in computer Graphic Designing by end of
December 2008.
The Institute has already started issuing application forms for this
programme. The selection of students will be done following an
interview.
The course will provide knowledge skills in application of computer
software packages for graphic designing. The course is spread over four
months and classes will be held twice a week in three hour sessions
totalling 94 hours.
The course will be conducted in Sinhala medium with the essential
terminology in English.

Bible Society annual meeting
The Ceylon Bible Society will hold its 196th annual meeting on
December 08 at 5.15 p.m. at the Bible House Auditorium. Chief guests
will be Ravi Algama, President of the National Council of YMCAs Sri
Lanka and Board Chairman of World Vision Lanka and Priyadarshini Algama.
Silver jubilee function
The silver jubilee function of Women's Education and Research Centre
will be held on December 13 at Dr. N.M. Perera Centre, 106, N.M. Perera

Yoga meditation
A yoga meditation workshop organised by the Maharagama Sethsada Yoga
Nikethanaya will be held at the Battaramulla Jana Kala Kendra premises
on December 12 from 7 am to 11 am. It will be conducted by Yoga
Consultant and psychiatrist Chamin Warnakula.
Stamps to mark Christmas
The first day cancellation of the commemorative stamps and first day
cover with greeting cards to commemorate Christmas 2008 will be held on
December 9 at 10 am at St. Mary's Cathedral, Kaluwella, Galle. It will
be held under the patronage of Posts and Telecommunication Minister
Mahinda Wijesekera and Most Rev. Dr. Harold Anthony Perera, Bishop of
