The Ruling Passion: A song recital today
Asitha Tennekoon (Tenor) along with Ramya de Livera Perera (Piano)
present The Ruling Passion: A Song Recital portraying the emotions
induced by love, today (24) and (25) at 7.30 pm at the Russian Cultural
Centre, Colombo 7.
Having studied voice in Sri Lanka for several years, Asitha is
currently reading for a Bachelor's Degree in Vocal Performance at the
renowned Jacobs School of Music, Bloomington, Indiana USA.
He was a regular prize winner at the Trinity and Royal Schools of
Music Prize Giving ceremonies and has been featured as a soloist in
numerous classical music performances in the past including two
performances with the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka.
Asitha is ably assisted by Ramya de Livera Perera at the piano, who
is no stranger to classical music circles in Sri Lanka having taught and
performed for over years.
The programme will feature a wide array of art song, arias and songs
from musical theatre spanning several centuries (17th-21st).
The selections in the first half of the programme include Schumann's
melodious Widmung (Dedication), Mozarts famous aria Il Mio Tesoro
Intanto, the heart-rending tenor aria by Donizetti 'Una Furtiva Lagrima'
along with compositions by Schubert, Bizet, Purcell, and Michael Head.
The songs from musical theatre will feature over fifty years of
Broadway composition: from items by Irving Berlin (Annie Get Your Gun)
and Cole Porter (Rosalie) to songs by the more modern Lucy Simon (The
Secret Garden) and Jason Robert Brown (The Last Five Years). In addition
to the tenor/piano combination, Peshali Yapa (Mezzo Soprano) and Dominic
Johnpillai (Violin) will also add colour to the evening's performance as
guest artistes.
The concert will also feature the talents of Johann Peiris (Flute)
and Prajapa de Silva (Cello).
While the evening's music is geared to present an enjoyable evening
for the audience, the selections also press upon the theme of the gamut
of passions that the force of love induces.
In essence 'The Ruling Passion' is a homage to that which controls
and consumes us all.
