Children of disabled War Heroes of the Security Forces and Police who excelled at the 2006 Year Five Scholarship Examination received special scholarship awards from the President’s Fund at a ceremony presided by Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa at the Defence Ministry yesterday. Here, Rajapaksa exchanging pleasantries with a group of children who received scholarships after the presentation ceremony. Fifty eight children received scholarship awards.

SC dismisses rights case for broadbasing ANCL

The Supreme Court yesterday refused to inquire into the alleged rights violation of the Lake House Employees Union. The Court having heard the parties decided that there was no basis to proceed with the rights application and dismissed it without costs.

Indian help for railway sector

The Indian Government has pledged US $ 168 million to Sri Lanka to develop the island’s railways sector. The financial assistance, provided under the ICL will be used to upgrade Sri Lanka’s coastal railway line hit by the 2004 tsunami and to strengthen the operating fleet of the Railways Department.

Rs. 6.2 billion for developing the East
