Two awards for Soul Sounds at World Choirs Games
Soul Sounds Sri Lanka’s premier female choir once again brought
credit to the country by winning a Gold medal in the Open Popular Choral
Music Category and a Silver medal in the Open Gospel Category, at the
5th World Choirs Games held in Graz, Austria.
They have topped their previous performance in China, where they won
two silver medals.
The choir is directed by Soundarie David and Jerome L. de Silva. The
musicians include Neranjan De Silva and Christopher Prins.
Winning a gold in the Open Category is a significant achievement as
they competed against large choirs from across the globe including the
USA, South Africa, China, Germany, Austria and Australia, among others.
Soul Sounds competed against more than 25 choirs to bag their medals,
with a high score of 81.88 for the Gold. Members of the jury speaking to
he choir after the competition, commended the choir on their
versatility, passion and the soul.
The choir is still to compete in the Open Folklore Category on the
July 17, where they will feature traditional Sri Lankan folk music.
Following the competition they will be performing in New Delhi on the
July 20, for a concert organised by the Sri Lankan High Commission and
the Nirmana Foundation.
Together with The Revelations, who emerged category winners in the
Gospel Ensemble Category, Soul Sounds is proud that Sri Lankan choral
music is being showcased in the world music arena.
