UPFA victorious in East

The United People's Freedom Alliance recorded an emphatic victory at the first ever Provincial Council Election in the East, securing 20 out of 37 seats on offer, while polling 52.21 per cent of the total votes.

A mandate for ending terror, restoring peace - President

The results of the elections to the first Eastern Provincial Council show the people's endorsement of the Government's policy of restoring democracy and normality to areas hitherto controlled by the terrorists, and the overall development programme already initiated in the Eastern Province, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said yesterday.

Poll a great success - FM

It is a great success of the Government's policy when it holds an election with a voter turnout of 60 per cent in the Eastern Province when one considers the province was once ruled by a Fascist dictatorship, said Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama in Birmingham on Saturday.
