UPFA victorious in East

The United People's Freedom Alliance recorded an emphatic victory at the first ever Provincial Council Election in the East, securing 20 out of 37 seats on offer, while polling 52.21 per cent of the total votes.

The results of the elections to the first Eastern Provincial Council show the people's endorsement of the Government's policy of restoring democracy and normality to areas hitherto controlled by the terrorists, and the overall development programme already initiated in the Eastern Province, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said yesterday.

Cannes red carpet for film on tsunami

Alison Thompson will go from refugee camp to red carpet this week with a little help from superstar Sean Penn. The Sydney-born New York-based filmmaker's documentary The Third Wave will screen at Cannes after Penn championed it. Thompson was running an IDP camp in Sri Lanka where she made The Third Wave. A chance encounter with tsunami survivor and model Petra Nemcova changed the film's fortunes.

Kingfisher to fly to Lanka soon

Kingfisher Airlines, India's first and only five star airline, is planning to fly to Sri Lanka at end of the year. Regional Manager Trade Sales, of the airline, Ritam Saha in an exclusive interview told the Daily News Business that they hope to initially operate three frequencies per week to Sri Lanka.
