CIM edifies Marketers on stress and time management

“Racing Against the Clock and Your Mind” was a training programme on stress and time management organised by The Chartered Institute of Marketing Sri Lanka Region, held recently at Galle Face Hotel, and sponsored by Dialog Telekom.

The programme was conducted by an international corporate trainer and renowned motivational speaker Bob Feldman. Over 25 participants availed themselves of the programme which was highly participative and interesting.

In his presentation, Bob stated that the human body too is subject to “burnout” like all other machines and equipment. Quoting from “The Truth about Burnout”, Bob elaborated on 3 dimensions of “burnout” i.e. exhaustion, cynicism and ineffectiveness.

Talking of work related stress, he explained some of the most common causes of “burnout” which included work overload and unreasonable deadlines, lack of control, insufficient rewards, breakdown of communication, unfairness and value conflicts etc.

The participants were also enlightened on several stress relieving exercises such as yoga, conscious deep breathing, progressive relaxation, guided imagery and visualisation replete with the relative merits of each method. He also stated that a few deep breaths and free-style stretching could be helpful in a stressful situation.

Establishing goals and setting priorities, making a To-Do list, identifying the productive hours of the day and making maximum use of them, organising the workspace, prioritisation of work and the 80/20 rule, effective delegation were among the other topics that were discussed at the programme.

Concluding his presentation, Bob stated that stress management, time management and change management were all about personal management and the ultimate purpose of the programme was to help participants to be in control which leads to planned productivity.

The CIM Professional Series was initiated by The Chartered Institute of Marketing with the objective of developing the soft skills and competencies of marketers thereby contributing towards excellence in the marketing profession in the country.

The CIM Professional Series also helps The Institute’s members to attain the CPD hours required to elevate themselves in their professional careers.
