The Colombo Dockyard PLC (CDPLC) is to invest Rs. 475 million for technology improvements and infrastructure development this year.

Managing Director of CDPLC Mangala P.B. Yapa said the company expects to invest Rs. 475 million for the technology improvement and infrastructure development.

The company has already secured ship building orders till 2010. At the moment they are in the process of delivering those orders. "We are confident on delivering these orders on time", he said.

"However we are having discussions with relevant parties for gaining more orders for small vessels and Aluminum vessels he said.

Talking about the Sri Lankan market Yapa said that CDPLC provided vessels for Sri Lanka Navy and Sri Lanka Ports Authority. At present there is no such big demand for ships in Sri Lanka and the company has the capacity to cater for the demand if there is a increasing demand in the Sri Lankan market.

India is a very big market and the demand for ships is increasing. The company has closer links with the Indian shipping industry and Middle East market. But the company was extremely successful in the Indian market, he said.

Meanwhile CDPLC having secured an order for the construction of two 250 passenger cum 100 ton cargo carrying capacity vessels for the Government of India commenced block assembling work of the first vessel yesterday.

"This is the first time the Sri Lankan ship building industry is manufacturing passenger vessels for the Indian government. The two vessels will bring USD 36.6 million for the company.

The first passenger vessel is scheduled to be delivered in the first week of September 2009 and the second vessel will be delivered in May 2010. We are confident that the company could meet these deadlines and fulfil the requirement of our client", he said.

The Administrator of the Union Territories of Lakshadweep B.V. Selvaraj, I.A.S said CDPLC is a reputed ship builder in the region. They have closer contacts with the private and public sector companies in India.

"Indian maritime industry is a huge industry and we are also required to work closely with our neighbouring countries," he said.
