Sri Lankan paddlers fail to live upto expectations

China retained both men's and women's titles at the World Team Table Tennis Championships 2008 which concluded in Guangzhou Gymnasium in Guangzhou, China on Sunday. Chinese men beat Korea in straight sets (3-0) while Chinese women defeated Singapore (3-1).

Both Sri Lanka men's and women's teams failed to live up to expectations as the Lankan women went down to Bosnia in their deciding match. Only Deepika Rodrigo was able to win her match but lost her reverse singles as the final scores were 3-1 in favour of Bosnia.

Results: Deepika Rodrigo beat Miljana Antonic 11-4, 11-9, 11-13, 11-3, Ishara Madurangi lost to Dragana Iveljic 12-10, 7-11, 6-11, 11-8, 7-11, Ruhansi Wijekoon lost to Belma Busatlic 4-11, 11-5, 3-11, 11-8, 4-11, Deepika Rodrigo lost to Dragana Iveljic 4-11, 7-11, 1-11.

Lankan men beat Jamaica in a closely contested game. Yohan Deshapriya triumphed his both matches to steer Sri Lanka to a 3-2 victory. Results: Yohan Deshapriya beat Peter Moo-Young 11-7, 5-11, 11-9, 11-7, Rohan Sirisena lost to Darryl Strachan 8-11, 11-6, 3-11, 11-8, 9-11, K.S.T. Chalitha Ranjana beat Joseph Dibbs 11-6, 7-11, 11-4, 9-11, 11-6, Rohan Sirisena lost to Peter Moo-Young 9-11, 7-11, 10-12, Yohan Deshapriya beat Darryl Strachan 11-6, 6-11, 11-9, 11-6. In the previous fixture Sri Lanka men's team lost to Ecuador (2-3) where Lankans missed their chance to enter the next stage in their division four.

Results: Rohan Sirisena beat Geovanny Coello Bonilla 12-10, 11-13, 8-11, 11-8, 11-7, K.S.T.Chalitha Ranjana lost to Alberto Mino Puga 6-11, 12-10, 8-11, 8-11, Yohan Deshapriya beat Dino Suarez-Aviles 11-8, 12-10, 5-11, 11-6, Rohan Sirisena lost to Alberto Mino Puga 13-11, 8-11, 8-11, 8-11, K.S.T.Chalitha Ranjana lost to Geovanny Coello Bonilla 8-11, 8-11, 9-11.

In another match lankan men beat Turkmenistan in 3-1, results: Rohan Sirisena beat Yagshimurad 5-11, 12-10, 11-7, 12-10, Yohan Deshapriya lost to Rashid Ahmedov 11-9, 9-11, 5-11, 5-11, K.S.T. Chalitha Ranjana beat Vyacheslav Klychev 11-5, 11-4, 11-5, Rohan Sirisena beat Rashid Ahmedov 11-7, 11-5, 11-7.

The Lankan team arrived in Sri Lanka on Monday.
